Description
Red 1937 Chevrolet Half-Ton Pick Up. Front view.
The Chevy 1/2-ton is one of the most charismatic Chevrolet designs of all time.
By the mid 1930s, pickup trucks were a staple in communities all across the country. Earlier that decade, Chevy had acquired the Martin-Parry body company, allowing them to provide steel-bodied half-ton pickup trucks to customers. After the Great Depression, more and more automotive manufacturers began introducing trucks to their lineup and by 1937, Chevy trucks were much more streamlined – featuring heftier bodies and bigger engines.
Sporting sturdier bodywork, a new generation of inline-six giving 78 hp and 170 lb-ft of torque, and streamlined styling that might have been influenced by high-speed locomotives—and the first designed by the Art & Color department and Harley Earl—a ’37 Chevy truck made a long-distance trip monitored by the AAA on which it recorded nearly 21 mpg. Eighty years later, Truck Trend editors still rarely get 21 mpg road-tripping in gasoline-powered pickups.
An amazing vehicle, amazingly restored and turned into a stylish classic hot rod.
