Description
The Albaicin from the Alhambra. Granada, Spain.
The Albaicin is a district of the city of Granada, Spain. Of medieval Muslim origin, it retains the narrow winding streets of its Moorish past dating back to the Nasrid Kingdom of Granada. It was declared a World Heritage Site in 1984, along with the Alhambra.
Built against the wide and steep mountainside of the hill confronting the Alhambra, it was here where the population of the city lived. Walking up to the San Nicolas square below the white church in the middle of the image is strenuous uphill walking though a maze of narrow passages between white buildings of all sort and shape full of little picturesque corners and spots. The view of the Alhambra from San Nicolas is splendid, so this place is the usual destination of unaccountable visitors as the sun goes down and sets after hueing the fortress all the more red.
