Description
Alcazar de Segovia facing the setting sun.
Vertical view of the Spanish medieval fortress from the northwestern fields below its "prow". The beautiful fairy tale atmosphere would not have been appreciated by the sieging enemy. The trees would not be there and the defenders would have a clear killing field under the sheer cliffs. A terrible place to attack.
Rising out on a rocky crag above the confluence of two rivers and coming at you like an unstoppable battleship or an armored train, this fortress in Segovia is one of the most distinctive castle-palaces in Spain. The medieval Alcázar was originally built as a fortress on top of older defensive structures dating back to the Roman empire. After the Reconquest, the Castle was turned into a Royal Palace. Centuries later it also served as state prison, artillery college and a military academy since then. It is currently used as a museum and a military archives building.
There is no vantage point from which this fortress would not impress me. A truly awe-striking strong-point with a fairy tale touch.
