Description
Alhambra Arabesque, Granada, Spain.
Detail of the rich Arabesques, intertwined with Nasrid shields and framed with writing on one of the walls of the Nasrid Palaces in the Alhambra de Granada.
Al-Hambra means the red fortress and the name comes from the color of its walls and towers. Granada was the last surviving kingdom of Al-Andalus and its capture marked the end of the Reconquest of Spain that finally expelled the Muslims from western Europe, after 700 years of presence. During much of this time Al Andalus became a one of the most relevant havens of culture and science if the world.
The fortress and palaces of Al-Hambra, a place of breathtaking beauty, preserved by the wisdom of a Sultan who was later considered a coward for surrendering the fortress before it was utterly destroyed in a fight he could not possibly win. A man who preserved such treasure for mankind should be remembered with more respect.
