Description
Floor Tiles, Alhambra Palaces, Granada, Spain.
Detail view of the floor tiles in one of the stances of the Nasrid Palaces at the Alhambra in Granada.
Built around 1350 AD, the Nasrid Palaces and gardens in the Alhambra is the apex of Nasrid architecture. In this palaces Nasrid art achieved its greatest degree of magnificence, sensitivity and harmony. Light, water, color and exquisite decoration turn this palace into a pleasure for the senses. The abstract and geometric decoration steps back in this palace for a more naturalistic style, a result of Christian influence.
This tiny square shaped chapel stands adjacent to the Partal. The chapel is believed to have been constructed during the reign of Yusuf I because of its decoration. The mihrab is oriented in the Alhambra tradition.
Raising on top and as part of the main wall, the chapel opens to the Generalife Gardens, the valley below and the Albaicin on the left side and to the Partal Gardens on the right, which turned this little jewel of a chapel into the perfect space for the Sultan to meditate on nature and creation.

A place of breathtaking beauty, preserved by the wisdom of a Sultan who was later labelled a coward for surrendering the fortress before it was utterly destroyed in a fight he could not possibly win. I for one am grateful.
