Although as frequently produced or even more than cave paintings, engravings are not as popular as the majestic chromatic creations of the paleolithic caveman. However, the ability of our ancestors for accurately depicting the wildlife around them with a few basic lines remains uncannily present on those eroded lines that are often difficult to find and appreciate inside the deep black caves where they were left for us to wonder.

Altxerri cave preserves rock paintings and engravings dating from the end of the Upper Magdalenian period, within the Upper Paleolithic. However, the pictures in a second gallery have been dated as the oldest paintings in Europe, with an estimated age of 39,000 years.

Foxes are extremely rare to find in paleolithic cave art. This arctic fox (the species determinded by its comparatively short ears) was engraved on a soft clay cave wall and later surrounded by the huge carved shape of a reindeer we cannot see on this image.

Less known than the French caves due to a much lower degree of publicity and touristic exploitation, the Spanish caves are many and equal in richness and artistry to those in France. Altamira, the first to ever be found was considered a fake at the time because nobody considered the paleolithic man was capable of such delicate art.

Altxerri cave cannot be visited. It was declared Unesco World Heritage site in 2008. One of those moving places where you can feel the presence of our ancestors and almost touch the hands that painted those walls...
