Description
Amazon Mattei, Capitoline Museums, Rome.
Ancient Roman restored copy of the Greek original from Phidias carved on the 5th century BC. The story of this Amazon is peculiar as its origin is linked to a contest between five sculptors for a place in the Temple of Diana at Ephesus. Those artists were, according to Pliny the Elder, Polyclitus, Phidias, Kresilas, Kydon and Phradmon.
The Amazon stands in a contrapposto stance, creating diagonals between tense and relaxed limbs, a feature typical of classical sculpture we can also find in the Statue of Augustus from Prima Porta. She is armed with bow and arrows and a double headed axe. She protects herself with a helmet and a crescent shaped shield.
