Description
Arc de Triomphe de l'Etoile. Paris, France.
Panoramic view of the famous Parisian Arc de Triomphe, the triumphal arch designed by Napoleon to celebrate the military victories of the French Empire.
The Arc de Triomphe de l'Étoileis one of the most famous monuments in Paris, standing at the western end of the Champs-Élysées at the centre of Place Charles de Gaulle. The Arc de Triomphe honors those who fought and died for France in the French Revolutionary and Napoleonic Wars, with the names of all French victories and generals inscribed on its inner and outer surfaces. Beneath its vault lies the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier from World War I.
The Arc de Triomphe was designed by Jean Chalgrin in 1806, but was only finished in 1936, long after Napoleon's death. Inspired by the Arch of Titus in Rome, the Arc de Triomphe has an overall height of 164 ft, width of 148 and depth of 72 ft and remained the tallest Triumphal Arch in the world until 1938.
As for Paris... what can one say about the City of Light that has not already been said...?
