Description
Arsinoitherium Zitteli skull.
Arsinoitherium is one of those extinct giant mammals that belong to the megafauna. Related to elephants, Arsinoitheres looked more like a huge two horned rhinoceros-like herbivore. They lived during the late Eocene and the early Oligocene of northern Africa from 36 to 30 million years ago, in areas of tropical rainforest and at the margin of mangrove swamps.
Adults of the species stood around 6 ft tall at the shoulders and 10 ft long. The most noticeable features of Arsinoitherium were a pair of enormous horns above the nose and a second pair of tiny knob-like ones over the eyes.
An amazing creature that fascinates us all, grown-ups and kids alike.
