Description
Assyrian Lion, Dur-Sharrukin, around 713 BC.
Detail from the colossal human figure grasping a lion from the exterior façade of Sargon’s throne room in Dur-Sharrukin, the Assyrian capital in the time of Sargon II of Assyria (current Khorsabad).
The figure holding the lion has long been suspected to represent Gilgamesh. However, there is no inscription on the sculpture, and the identification has remained unsure.
