Description
Aurora and Cephalus, Pierre Narcise Guerin, 1810.
Guérin (1774-1833) was a Parisian painter, disciple of Jean-Baptiste Regnault, and is considered one of the masters of classicism. This oil on canvas depictsd Aurora and Cephalus, inspired by the Metamorphose, a work by the Latin poet Ovid (1st century AD).
In Greek mythology, the Aeolian Cephalus was the son of Deioneus, king of Phocis, and Diomede. Cephalus married Procris, a daughter of Erechtheus, and both had sworn eternal fidelity.
Eos, the goddess of dawn (Aurora), was condemned to fall in love consecutively with mortals, by decision of Aphrodite, who did not forgive having found her in bed with her lover, Ares. After the unfortunate end of her first mortal lover, Orion, Eos became infatuated with Cephalus. She kidnapped him and tried to make him her lover.
This painting can be admired at the Musee de Louvre in Paris, France.
