Artist's Description

Ishtar Gate Golden Aurochs, circa 670 BC. Babylon. Left orientation.

The Neo-Babylonian Empire reached its peak during the reign of Nebuchadnezzar II (r. 604–562 B.C.), known for deporting the Jews to Babylon after the capture of Jerusalem.

During his reign, Babylon became a city of splendor. As stone was hard to come by, buildings were erected from molded colorfully glazed bricks and Babylon became a resplendent city.

The main important street in Babylon crossed under the Ishtar Gate. The gate, built by Nebuchadnezzar II, was a glazed-brick structure decorated with figures of bulls and dragons honoring their gods Adad and of Marduk. North of the gate the roadway was lined with glazed figures of striding lions, the animal associated with Ishtar, goddess of love and war. Those lions protected the street and served as a guide for the ritual processions from the city to the temple.

About Weston Westmoreland

Weston Westmoreland

Hi there, Born in '72 and shooting pictures since '83, I particularly enjoy creating wide panoramic compositions, HDRs, HDR Panoramas... But not just... Here you will find landscapes and cityscapes, ancient ruins and modern buildings, moons and seas, planes and boats, guns and flowers, animals and machines, forests and deserts, vanguard and prehistory, digital and film, color and black & white, graves and newborns, temples, trenches, palaces, castles, tanks, churches, bunkers... However, they have some things in common: they are meaningful images, I believe them all to be beautiful, and they are for the most part unique. Come in and judge for yourself. W. W. WE CAN CUSTOMIZE ANY PICTURE TO YOUR PERSONAL LIKING AND MAKE IT...
