Description
Bald Eagle flight sequence.
Five consecutive images of the flight of an American Eagle taken in under 3 seconds.
The bald eagle is a bird of prey found in most of Canada and Alaska, all of the contiguous United States, and the north of Mexico.
A sea eagle, it settles near large bodies of open water with abundant food and old-growth trees for nesting and feeds mostly on fish. It builds the largest tree nests ever recorded for any animal species.
The term "Bald eagle" derives from an older meaning of the word, "white headed". Sexes are identical in plumage, but females are 25 percent larger.
The bald eagle is both the national bird and national animal of the United States of America. It appears on its seal. In the late 20th century it was on the brink of extinction in the United States. Populations recovered and the species was transferred from the list of endangered species to the list of threatened species in 1995. It was later removed from the list of Threatened Wildlife in the Lower 48 States in 2007.
A proud and magnificent animal.
