Description
Bald Eagle crossing the entrance to the Johns Hopkins Glacier, Alaska.
A bald eagle flies across the Johns Hopkins inlet, in the Glacier Bay National Park and Preserve, Alaska. Johns Hopkins Glacier is a 12-mile glacier. It was named after the Johns Hopkins University in Baltimore, Maryland in 1893.
Glacier Bay is an American national park located in Southeast Alaska west of Juneau. President Calvin Coolidge proclaimed the area around Glacier Bay a national monument in 1925. In 1978, the Alaska National Interest Lands Conservation Act created Glacier Bay National Park and Preserve.
The bald eagle is a bird of prey found in North America. A sea eagle, it can be found in most of Canada and Alaska, all of the contiguous United States, and the north of Mexico.
The bald eagle is both the national bird and national animal of the United States of America, and appears on its seal. However, it was on the verge of extinction in the contiguous United States in the late 20th century. Populations have since recovered and the species was removed from the U.S. list of endangered species in 1995 and transferred to the list of threatened species. It was removed from the List of Endangered and Threatened Wildlife in the Lower 48 States in 2007.
