Description
Basilica Cistern, Istanbul, Turkey.
The Basilica Cistern, or Cisterna Basilica, is the largest of several hundred ancient cisterns that lay beneath the city of Constantinople (now Istanbul), capital city of the Eastern Roman Empire. The cistern, located 500 ft southwest of the Hagia Sophia , was built in the 6th century during the reign of Byzantine Emperor Justinian I, the same emperor who built the famous temple. Nowadays the cistern is kept with little or nowater, for public access inside the space.
