Description
Basque round stele in Espelette, France.
I found those beautiful steles by the Church of Saint Etienne in the little Basque village of Espelette, in France. They were commonplace before and during the Middle Age in the Basque country. The first Christians of the ancient land of the Basques mixed symbols of their old religion that worshiped nature with the new faith. The steles that were found were often reused in the new Christian cemeteries after the 6th century.
You can find them in many shapes and carved in many different patterns. Many of them are pre- or proto-Christian and grant us a beautiful way to see the transformation of Basque religion from Pagan into Christian.
