Chateau de Chenonceau by Emmanuel Lansyer (1884).
Emmanuel Lansyer (1835-1893) was a French landscape realist painter, considered one of the best of this time. Lansyer used to modify the perspective and the point of view of his paintings. In this case, he presents us with a point of view which is not possible, since he would have been inside the foundations of the north-east gardens.
This is probably the most peculiar and beautiful castle of the Loire Valley and I think there is a reason for this that makes it all the more special: It was devised and protected by women.
Starting from a square keep and its fortified mill, it was Diane de Poitiers in 1555 who commissioned the building of the bridge and gardens. Later on, Catherine de Medici added the gallery on top of the bridge and expanded the gardens. It passed then to Louise de Lorraine. It was Louise de Dupin who saved it from being destroyed in the French Revolution, defending its value as the only...
