Description
Chauvet Mammoth. Digital oil painting.
Detail of the adult mammoth at the center left of the breathtaking panel of the lions in Chauvet cave, France. This long panel consists of three parts, the right side is covered by a pride of cave lions and the left side is taken by rhinoceros. There is a small door-like depression on the wall in the middle of the panel, and one single horse inside which seems to be coming out from the mountain. The whole composition takes advantage of the shape of the cave, and creates a shrine of sorts, with this central altar under an M-shaped stone arch and this horse in it. This beautiful outlined shape of a mammoth, of which we can also see the forelegs here, was painted above and to the left the arch.
Those paintings are over 30,000 years old and their find ended with the idea that cave painting had evolved from basic drawings to its peak in the Magdalenian era, some 15,000 years ago,as seen in Altamira, Lascaux, Niaux or Ekain.
The paintings in Chauvet are for the most part monochrome and feature many different and unusual animals, like lions, hyenas, panthers, bears, and some more usual like horses, aurochs, rhinoceros or mammoth, all of them of extraordinary artistry.
