Description
Stenciled Red Hand touching Mammoth. Chauvet cave, France.
Detail of the negative hand stenciled in red paint inside and after the schematic shape of a mammoth was outlined from trunk to back in overlaying black strokes.
Among all the painted mammoths, this one is my favorite for three reasons: First, they need to tell you there is a mammoth there, or you will miss it, drawn to the hand. Second, it is a simple black outline with a couple of traces to mark the tusks, but in it we find the head of a a finely proportioned mammoth in a three-quarter view. Even the eyes are hinted by the shade in two holes. And third, the addition of the hand itself.
The red negative hand was painted after the mammoth. This is a peculiar hand. The author placed her (these hands were most likely female) palm on the rock-face and then twisted it to the right. The pinky came out, the ring and middle mounted, the index dropped and the thumb went under. This hand, like the mammoth, is in three-quarter view. Like touching the giant.
I have found no other source considering this theory, but the more I think about it the stronger it seems to me. And that would be something, uh?
The last mammoth died some 3,200 years ago. The pyramids were already standing....
Those paintings are over 30,000 years old and their find ended with the idea that cave painting had evolved from basic drawings to its peak in the Magdalenian era, some 15,000 years ago,as seen in Altamira, Lascaux, Niaux or Ekain.
The paintings in Chauvet are for the most part monochrome and feature many different and unusual animals, like lions, hyenas, panthers, bears, and some more usual like horses, aurochs, rhinoceros or mammoth, all of them of extraordinary artistry.
