Staring Bison at Chauvet cave, France. Digital oil painting.
Detail of one of the peculiar staring bison at the outer right of the breathtaking panel of the lions in Chauvet cave, France. This long panel consists of three parts, the right side is covered by a pride of cave lions and the left side is taken by rhinoceros. There is a small door-like depression on the wall in the middle of the panel, and one single horse inside which seems to be coming out from the mountain. The whole composition takes advantage of the shape of the cave, and creates a shrine of sorts, with this central altar under an M-shaped stone arch and this horse in it.
This beautiful bison was painted to the right of the lions. Unlike most of the figures found in caves, which are painted from a side view, this bison is uses the shape of the cave to turn towards us and seems to return our stare. Just amazing.
