Description
Chora Christ, Istanbul, Turkey.
Detail of the mosaic of Christ Pantocrator in the south dome of the inner narthex of the Chora Church.
This mosaic of Christ holding the Bible watches over you from the center of a splendid nerved cupola also completely covered in golden and blue tesserae.
The Church of the Holy Savior in Chora is a Byzantine Orthodox church from
Constantinople preserved now as the Chora Museum in Istanbul.
The interior of the building is covered with what many experts consider the finest surviving Byzantine mosaics and probably the finest Byzantine mosaics ever. These mosaics were preserved through the Ottoman era because when Constantinople fell and the church was turned into a mosque, the Muslims plastered over the mosaics instead of destroying them. This invaluable treasure was thus preserved and later restored when the mosque was turned into the museum it is nowadays.
