Description
Dying Greek Warrior, Temple of Aphaia. Aegina island Greece. 500 BC.
Detail of one of the sculptures on the East pediment of the Aphaia sanctuary built around 500 BC. The figures on the pediment narrate the story of the first Trojan war, in which Heracles killed the King of Troy Laomedon. It is Laomedon, fatally wounded by one of Heracles' arrows, this sculpture depicts. Laomedon still tries to stand and fight seeking support in his shield.
Aphaia was a Greek goddess who was worshiped exclusively at this sanctuary. Significant quantities of Late Bronze Age figurines have been discovered at the site, indicating that cult activity at the site might have been continuous from the 14th century BC and suggesting a Minoan origin. The last temple is of an unusual plan and is also significant for its pedimental sculptures, which are thought to illustrate the change from Archaic to Early Classical technique.
