Description
Execution Without Hearing Under the Moorish Kings. Henri Regnault, 1870.
This painting is one of three works that Regnault was to send as part of his three-year stay at the Academy of Rome in order to be exhibited at the School of Fine Arts in Paris , where it was finally presented in 1872, after the artist died in 1871 during the Franco-Prussian war.
The theme is inspired by a legend from the Al-Andalusian Kingdom of Granada, the “massacre of the Abencerrages”. The format was quite unusual (3.05 m high by 1.46 m wide). The architectural background is freely borrowed from the Hall of the Two Sisters in the Alhambra in Granada where the painter stayed, before settling temporarily in Tangier where he had acquired a house.
This painting was commented on by Théophile Gautier, among others, who admired it.
This painting can be admired at the Musee d'Orsay in Paris, France.
As for Paris... what can one say about the City of Light that has not already been said...?
