Description
Feathered Neanderthal. Digital oil painting.
Close up of the reconstruction of a Neanderthal bust as seen in the Museum of Human Evolution (MEH - Museo de la Evolucion Humana) in Burgos, Spain, 20 minutes away from Atapuerca, where Homo antecessor, the oldest European known so far, was discovered and where "Miguelon" the best preserved Homo Heidelbergensis craneum ever found was unearthed.
Studies carried out in Gibraltar suggest that Neanderthals used raptor and corvid feathers, normally black, to decorate their bodies. The Neanderthal in the image covered himself in furs, painted his skin, and decorated himself with black feathers and talons taken from eagles, vultures and crows.
During the last decades, our vision of Neanderthals, our closest brother humans, is rapidly changing and shedding all the Victorian prejudice that burdened it since the discovery of their first bones in the Neander valley back in the 19th century.
Recent studies have proved beyond any doubt that modern humans (except Africans) carry 2-3% of Neanderthal genes in our DNA. Neanderthals extinguished, but not quite. A small amount of them interbreeded with us sporadically and the echo of their existence reverberates in us. Seems like some sort of coexistence might have been possible on occasions.
We also know they were physiologically capable of language, their brains were bigger than ours, they took care of their elderly and injured, they held funerary rituals and they learned from Sapiens when they finally met us in the twilight of their years. They were far from the dumb monkeys we have always depicted.
Was it us who killed them? Unfortunately, the answer is that on purpose, unwillingly or both, we are most likely responsible for their extinction.
