Description
David looking at Perseus and Medusa, Florence, Italy.
The replica of Michelangelo's David looks with envy at Perseus in his triumph over Medusa. This is a side view of the bronze Perseus in the Loggia dei Lanzi. Perseus with the Head of Medusa is a bronze sculpture made by Benvenuto Cellini in 1545, that was made to be displayed right where it is, next to to the original David from Michelangelo that was replaced by a replica after it was severely vandalized. There are many things that make this one the most important statue in the Loggia, but I will just say it is magnificent, beautiful, impressive and shocking.
What can I say about Florence that has not been already said... If you care for beauty at all, you should visit Florence at least once.
To me, it was a place to forget about myself and to live outwards for a few days, surrounded by all this overwhelming beauty.
I spent five days in Florence by myself. I took the time to wander these old streets that transformed and filled the fate of medieval Europe with hope. I sat on stairs, or by the river, spent long time in the Loggia by the sculpture of the Rape of the Sabine Women, which fascinates me, took the time to read, to reflect, to wait, and to return to the right places at the right time to get the precise light.
One thing I do know. I will return.
