Description
Florence - Monumental Fountain by Bartolomeo Ammannati.
The story of this set is curious, peculiar and a little unfair.
In 1555 Ammannati received the first of a series of commissions from Duke Cosimo I de Medici. He would carve a monumental fountain for the Sala Grande in the Palazzo Vecchio, the great hall in the ducal residence, to honor Cosimo's bringing clear running water for the first time into the center of the city using aqueducts.
Ammannati designed a glorious composition of marble river gods and other allegorical figures, presided over by Juno, stylishly ensconced on an overarching stone rainbow.
However, on Michelangelo's death, Cosimo unexpectedly obtained Michelangelo's Victory. He placed it where the fountain should have been and Ammannati's masterpiece was never installed. Its components were dispersed.
The Monumental Fountain has been reunified at the Bargello Museum in its entirety for the first time since the 17th century.
The Museo Nazionale del Bargello in Florence is an amazing building full of splendid sculptures tourists seem to ignore for the most part. A wonderful place to enjoy art in an intimate atmpsphere.
