Description
Ganga Devi Statue, Kelaniya, Sri Lanka. Closer crop.
Detail of the Ganga Devi (Goddess) riding her mount Makara, from the walls of the Kelaniya Temple, Sri Lanka.
In Hinduism, the river Ganga (Ganges) is sacred and personified as the goddess Ganga. She is worshiped by Hindus and Buddhists who believe that bathing in the river causes the remission of sins and facilitates Moksha (liberation from the cycle of life and death).
The Kelaniya Raja Maha Vihara is a Buddhist temple believed to go back to before 500 BC. The temple flourished during the 15th-16th centuries but was later destroyed by the Portuguese. It was partially restored to its former splendor in the 17th-18th centuries under the Dutch empire. It was finally refurbished in the first half of the 20th century.
