Description
Girl in Santiago, Spain. Vintage version.
I often take panoramic pictures of beautiful places and like to include a person, preferably a woman, so one can judge the size of the landscape. More often than not I regret not to have asked the person for an e-mail so I can send them the picture afterwards. I always think about it, but I never have.
It was not the case this time. I was to Galicia last summer and was fortunate enough as to have a friend show me around. She came with me whenever she could and when she could not she would guide me in real time while I got lost in the myriad country roads that take you from one place to another in Galicia never heading straight. I used to tell her that Galicia is far from anywhere, the Romans called it "Finis-terrae" (the end of the world), but that once you are there, everything is further still.
I visited Santiago with her and my family and we got behind taking pictures. This is the Plaza de la Quintana. The square is divided in two, the square of the living, where my friend stands, and the square of the dead, downstairs from where she is. I caught her while shooting. Have not seen her pics yet.
I think she knows how important her company and the way she listened - and talked(!!) - was to me, last summer in particular and always in general, but I can never thank her enough, so here is my little homage.
Thank you, Anabel, see you soon, hopefully.
As for Santiago de Compostela, it is believed to hold the shrine of Saint James the Great, now the city's cathedral. Santiago is the final destination of the Way of St. James, a leading Catholic pilgrimage route originated in the 9th century which remains fully alive nowadays. In 1985 the city's Old Town was designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Santiago is a rainy place, the old stone buildings covered with moss that add that peculiar aging touch to everything. A small city, full of life, culture and students, worth the visit any time in the year.
