Description
Helicoidal Entrance Ramp, Vatican City.
I was astonished to see the immense majority of the crowd that visited the Vatican Museums bunched into the escalator that ran by this entrance ramp. Lucky for me because I had it all to myself.
Ok, this is not Momo's incomparable spiral staircase, the one you take to leave the museums and which happens to be not 10 yards away when you reach the top of this ramp. It is however, an amazingly aerial and elegant passageway that hangs form the ceiling as if it was peeling off. There is a micro museum along its course, The Way of the Sea (la Via della Mare) with handmade models of ancient boats, original tribal oars and the like, and a beautiful gondola at the bottom.
If you visit the Vatican Museums, please, do not take the escalator.
