Description
This is one of the inscriptions in the visitor center at Normandy American Cemetery, above Omaha Beach, in France.
IF EVER PROOF WERE NEEDED THAT WE FOUGHT FOR A CAUSE AND NOT FOR CONQUEST, IT COULD BE FOUND IN THESE CEMETERIES. HERE WAS OUR ONLY CONQUEST: ALL WE ASKED … WAS ENOUGH … SOIL IN WHICH TO BURY OUR GALLANT DEAD.
General Mark W. Clark
Chairman, American Battle Monuments Commission, 1969-1984
I merged it with one of my pictures of the unaccountable crosses on the cemetery so no further explanation should be needed by anyone that knows and respects history and sacrifice.
So many young men lay down their lives to fight fascism. Forever in their debt, they should remain honored and unforgotten.
