Description
Il Gesu, Rome.
Triumph of the Name of Jesus by Giovanni Battista Gaulli, main nave of the church of Gesu.
This splendid fresco in "trompe l’oeil" (an art technique to create the optical illusion of three dimensions) turns a part of the barrel vault into a gaping hole opening towards the heavenly skies. Il Gesu was inspired by Pozzo's fresco in the ceiling of the Church of Saint Ignatius of Loyola at Campus Martius, also Rome.
There is a mirror set at an angle on the aisle of this church so you can enjoy this amazing painting and gild-work at leisure without stressing your neck. However, it would be worth the pain.
