Description
Inis Fail, The Island of Ireland, by Oliver Sheppard.
This bronze sculpture from 1901 by Irish artist Oliver Sheppard represents the female personification of Ireland. It can be found at Kilmainham Gaol in Dublin.
Taking the name from the sacred stone Lia Fail, the Tuatha De Danann named Ireland Inis Fáil (inis meaning island), and from this 'Fal' became an ancient name for Ireland. Inisfail appeared as a synonym for Erin in some Irish romantic and nationalist poetry in English in the nineteenth and early twentieth centuries, like Aubrey Thomas de Vere's 1863 poem Inisfail.
