Description
Lambda Centauri Nebula, Enhanced.
Infrared image from NASA's WISE (Wide-field Infrared Survey Explorer) of IC 2944, the Lambda Centauri nebula, also known as the Running Chicken nebula. The nebula is about 5,800 light-years away and nests a new cluster of stars born nearly 8 million years ago. much younger than the latest dinosaurs.
The red, glowing dust is the coolest material, composed of metallic dust. The greenish part is formed by warmer dust of smog-like material. The large green ring-like structure is some 77 light-years across.
