Laocoon and his sons, Vatican City.
Revisited view of the statue of Laocoon and His Sons, also known as the Laocoon Group. One of the most famous ancient sculptures since it was unearthed in Rome in 1506. It is believed to be the same statue the main Roman writer on art, Pliny the Elder, praised in the highest terms. The figures are near life-size and the group is almost 7 ft high.
The sculpture depicts the agony of the Trojan priest Laocoön and his sons Antiphantes and Thymbraeus as they are killed by sea serpents sent by the gods. Unlike the agony often expressed in Christian art , this suffering, shown through the contorted expressions of the faces and straining bodies,has no redemptive power or reward.
Pliny attributes the work to Greek sculptors from the school of of Rhodes. It is considered "one of the finest examples of the Hellenistic baroque" and certainly in the Greek tradition, but it is not known whether it is an original work or a copy. It...
