Description
Villa Le Goeland, Biarritz.
Biarritz is a city of the French Basque Country. It was a fishing and whaling village that turned into a summer vacation ever since the European royalty began visiting in the 1800s.
Since then, Biarritz has been known as the pearl in the crown of Southwestern France. The luxurious resort in the French Basque Country with its mild climate and beautiful coastline has attracted visitors such as Napoleon III and his wife, Eugenie, whom the prestigious Hotel du Palais was built for. Nowadays, Biarritz is known as the European surfing capital, with annual competitions of world-class standard.
As a result, lots of wonderful villas of different styles were built all along the seaside. One of them, standing on a promontory above the port vieux (the old harbor) from where look-outs scanned the sea for whales in now distant times, is the Villa Le Goeland, the Seagull in French. This beautiful villa, built from stone, brick, and wood, with its needlepoint turrets and steep rooftops, was built in 1903 and is the most representative building of the Belle Epoque in Biarritz.
