Description
Sculpture of Blessed Ludovica Albertoni, by Gian Lorenzo Bernini, Rome.
Bernini was to the Baroque what Michelangelo was to the Renaissance. This is one of his masterpieces. Bernini did not only genially design and sculpt this impressive figure, but he also designed the shrine and the lighting. AN amazing sculpture, full of intensity and delicacy, I could admire for hours.
Blessed Ludovica Albertoni is an Italian Baroque funerary monument . The sculpture is located in the Church of San Francesco a Ripa in Rome and is said to be Bernini's last work. It was completed in 1674.
Ludovica Albertoni, was a Roman noblewoman who lived a pious life, working for the poor of the Trastevere neighborhood, where she was buried in 1533.
The figure of Ludovica is set above the altar of the Altieri Chapel on the left side of the church. Bernini designed an architectural setting that focuses attention on the marble sculpture. The central figure is lit on both sides by large windows concealed by the returns as seen here, but the effect disappears when electric light is lit..
Ludovica Albertoni is presented on a mattress at the moment of mystical communion with God. The folds of her habit reflect her state of turmoil, and her head is thrown back onto an embroidered pillow supported by a headrest. Beneath her figure is a deeply crumpled sculpted cloth above a red-marble sarcophagus, where Ludovica is interred.
