Description
La Maison Rose in the Evening. Montmartre, Paris. Full image.
A tiny pink house built on the junction of Rue de l’Abreuvoir and Rue des Saules some time before 1850, la Maison Rose was made famous, like many other little corners in Montmartre, by the paintings of one of the artists living there at the beginning of the 20th century, Maurice Utrillo.
Sometime in the early 1900s, Laure "Germaine" Gargallo and her husband Ramon Pichot, a Spanish painter, opened La Maison Rose. Pichot favored the impressionist style when creating new art pieces and was part of Picasso’s inner circle.
Together Germaine and Pichot ran the modest coffee shop and canteen, drawing in artists who would go on to become some of the biggest names of the 20th-century. Albert Camus, Suzanne Valadon and Maurice Utrillo all frequented the restaurant at some point or another.
The little restaurant in this slopey corner resting against an art-deco building of the 30s, has become one of the most iconic places in Montmartre.
As for Paris... What can one say about the City of Light that has not already been said?
