Description
Maya Stela A from Copan by Frederick Catherwood. Rear view.
Drawing of the back side of a Maya stele by Frederick Catherwood from his journeys with John Lloyd Sytephens around 1843.
Stela A depicts the 13th ajaw or ruler of Copan, named Uaxaclajuun Ub'aah K'awiil. He is called "18 Rabbit" in English. He ruled Copán and the surrounding area for 43 years. 18 Rabbit was likely captured and killed in Quirigua in 738 AD after Quirigua tried to assert their independence from Copán.
