Description
Messier 74 Galaxy, Enhanced.
Messier 74 (NGC 628) is a spiral galaxy in the constellation Pisces. It is about 32 million light-years away from Earth. The galaxy contains two clearly defined spiral arms and is used as an archetypal example of a grand design spiral galaxy. M74 is home to about 100 billion stars.
We can see a smattering of bright glowing pink regions of ionized hydrogen decorating the spiral arms. These are huge, relatively short-lived, clouds of gas which glow due to the strong radiation from young stars embedded within them.
