Minoan Bull Head, Knossos, Crete. c. 1500 BC
Bull’s head rhyton from the Knossos Palace in Crete. The carving was made from a single block of black steatite. The eyes are inlaid with rock crystal, with rim and iris of red jasper. The snout is outlined with an inlay of white seashell. The rhyton was a ritual vessel for pouring liquids (libation). It dates to the Neopalatial period, c. 1600-1450 BC. This magnificent sculpture can be found a the Heraklion Archaeological Museum in Crete.
