Description
Miramar Palace in San Sebastian, Basque Country, Spain. Digital oil painting.
Sitting atop a hill right above the bay of La Concha and connected to the beach by a private staircase, The Royal Palace of Miramar was was built in 1893 commissioned by the Spanish Royal Family, based on an 1889 project by English architect Selden Wornum. Wornum designed the palace in a pure English style with some neogothic ornamentation.
The close relationship between San Sebastian (and the Basque Coast) and the Spanish Royal Crown, particularly its queens, began with Isabella II of Spain, who, in the mid-19th century, began to summer in the city in order to take sea baths. The bond became stronger when Maria Christina of Austria, consort of Alfonso XII of Spain, moved the court's summer location to San Sebastian when she was widowed. The Royal Family's summer visits required a Royal Summer House. So Miramar Palace came to be.
The Palace preserves the original outside look. Parties are conducted in the palace's gardens and noble areas, particularly in the context of the San Sebastian International Film Festival.
Currently, the Palace and its gardens are open to the public. The Miramar Palace houses the Summer Courses of the University of the Basque Country.
Bellow Miramar Palace, the sandy curve of the Concha Bay (the Shell) is usually counted among the top ten beaches in the world. From Chillida's sculpture the Comb of the Wind on the left, to the old casino once visited by Mata Hari on the right, this breathtaking beach was the chosen summer destiny of international royalty for over a century and a half.
Nowadays, San Sebastian stands as the city with the highest concentration of Michelin stars per inhabitant in the whole world, even before Paris, boasting three 3-Michelin-Star restaurants.
Not one driving hour away from the Guggenheim-Bilbao Museum, San Sebastian is the second city in size in the Basque Country, a beautiful land to visit.
