Neanderthal Cave Art, Gibraltar, 39,000 ybp.
This criss-crossing array of grooves scratched on a ledge inside Gorham's cave in Gibraltar some 39,000 years ago is believed to have been made by Neanderthals. This makes it the first engraved cave art attributed to Neanderthals, and probably the most complex. Studies carried out in Gibraltar also suggest that Neanderthals used raptor and corvid feathers, normally black, to decorate their bodies. We believe now Neanderthals decorated their bodies with furs, feathers and pendants. There is no reason to question they were capable of other forms of art.
