Description
Garnier Opera House from Galeries Lafayette. Full image.
Close up view of the east side of the Palais Garnier as seen from the terrace at the top of the Galeries Lafayette Paris Haussmann, with the Louvre rooftops and Paris in the background.
The Palais Garnier or Opera Garnier was built around 1870 by Napoleon III. It soon became known as the Palais Garnier, in acknowledgment of its extraordinary opulence and the architect Charles Garnier's plans and designs, which are representative of the Napoleon III style. The theater has been a monument historique of France since 1923.
Probably due to its use as the setting for Gaston Leroux's 1910 novel The Phantom of the Opera, the Palais Garnier has been called "probably the most famous opera house in the world, a symbol of Paris like Notre Dame Cathedral, the Louvre, or the Sacre Coeur.
As for Paris... what can one say about the City of Light that has not already been said...?
