Description
Ottoman style houses, Balat, Asian Istanbul.
One of the most popular streets in Balat seen from below. Balat is one of the districts south of the Golden Horn where the Greek and Jewish communities used to live and gradually abandoned during the migrations of the 20th century. These districts fell into decadence and are now coming back to life.
These houses represent the typical traditional Ottoman structure in Istanbul, which varies widely around this formula, but are normally wooden and show closed balconies or wider spaces above the ground floor.
This narrow sloped street with its colorful closed balconies is one of the most visited locations in Balat.
