Description
Panzer V Panther.
This is the picture of an actual working Panzer V Panther tank, shot in France.
The Panther was a German medium tank deployed during World War II in Europe from 1943 to the end in 1945. Designated as Sd.Kfz. 171. It was known as Panzerkampfwagen V Panther until 1944, when Hitler ordered the Roman numeral deleted.
The Panther was designed to counter the Soviet T-34 and to replace the Panzer III and IV. In the end it served alongside the Panzer IV and the Tiger until the war ended. It is considered one of the best tanks of World War II for its excellent firepower and protection.
The Panther was lighter faster and more agile than the Tiger I which it traded for weaker protection.
The Panther was rushed into combat at the Battle of Kursk despite numerous unresolved technical problems, leading to high losses due to mechanical failure. Most design flaws were rectified by late 1943 and the spring of 1944.
Though officially classified as a medium tank, its weight of 44.8 tons is more like that of a heavy tank. The Panther had a very high power to weight ratio however, making it extremely mobile regardless of its tonnage.
