Description
Place des Vosges. Paris, France.
Panoramic view of the Northern side of the Place des Vosges with King Henri IV's house at the center.
The Place des Vosges is the oldest planned square in Paris. Located in Le Marais district, it was a fashionable and expensive square to live in during the 17th and 18th centuries, and one of the central reasons for the fashionable nature of Le Marais among the Parisian nobility.
Originally known as Place Royale, it was built by Henri IV from 1605 to 1612. A true square, it embodied the first European program of royal city planning. Henri erected his house at one side of the square and the queen's at the opposite and then allowed the nobility to build around them depending on their personal relation. The requirement was they had to follow construction the style of the king's building, using red brick, and none could be higher.
Henri IV, possibly the best king France ever had and the one that did most to turn the dirty medieval city of Paris in the city we know now, would never see the square finished. He was murdered two years before the inauguration of the square.
As for Paris... What can one say about the City of Light that has not already been said...?
