Description
Le Pont des Arts, the Seine and the Eiifel Tower at night. Full panorama.
Night view of the Seine river, crossed by the Pont des Arts, with the Dome of the Bibliotheque Nazarino on the left and the Tour Eiffel on the right, seen from the Pont Neuf.
The bridge that became famous because of the padlocks lovers tied left attached to, was originally built between 1802 and 1804, under the reign of Napoleon. A nine-arch bridge for pedestrians, this was the first metal bridge in Paris. It was conceived as a suspended garden, with trees, banks of flowers, and benches.
Several deficiencies were reported on the bridge in 1976, caused by two aerial bombardments from both World Wars, and multiple collisions with boats. It was closed to circulation in 1977and in 1979 it suffered a 60 yard collapse after a barge rammed into it.
The present bridge was built between 1981 and 1984,the number of arches reduced from nine to seven but allowing the look of the old bridge to be preserved while realigning the new structure with the Pont Neuf.
The bridge has sometimes held open air art exhibitions, and is today a "studio en plein air" for painters, artists and photographers who are drawn to its unique point of view. The Pont des Arts is also frequently a spot for picnics during the summer. It is indeed a recurring place to visit in Paris.
As for Paris... What can one say about the City of Light that has not already been said?
