Description
Prehistoric Stele.
The first Christians of the ancient land of the Basques mixed symbols of their old religion that worshiped nature with the new faith. The steles that were found were often reused in the new Christian cemeteries after the 6th century. These stele is one of them.
Basque language is the oldest in Europe, its origins lost in time. It has no relation to any other known language and it is not Indoeuropean in origin. It is believed to be the original language in Europe before the new waves of Indoeuropean population arrived. Hence it is probably the only remnant of what the European cave painters spoke. Basque is now just spoken in the Basque Country, which lies part in France and part in Spain, but there are lots of names of places, rivers and mountains, in a much wider area that speak of its presence far beyond the actual borders.
A proof of how old Basque language is, not totally unchallenged but still amazing, is that the verbal root of the words knife and axe in basque come from the word stone. When knives and axes were made from rocks. That takes it back at least to the Neolithic.
