Description
Red Halfmoon Betta Splendens.
This is Diablo, a male betta or Siamese fighting fish. These little powerful fish, extremely territorial towards other males of their own species, are quite peaceful and placid in their relations with other species.
I developed an affinity for this beautiful bad-ass looking sweet-water pitt-bull years ago. These are sturdy creatures, accustomed to extreme natural conditions, and with a lack of fear towards people that makes them behave in a surprisingly friendly way once they get accustomed to their new home. They will come to greet you when you show up at the other side of the glass, you can hand feed them, clean around them... nothing seems to disturb them. The close presence of female bettas, who when bigger are as aggressive as males and often kill them, will make the male extend and display its tail as a peacock, which is always a spectacular and colorful pleasure.
Bettas are often kept isolated in small aquariums, which might seem like an awesome idea, nice to see and easy to keep, but only ensures a miserable existence for this magnificent fish, particularly when the aquarium is of spherical shape. These typical round fish bowls, apart from being too small and lonesome, distort the field of vision of any fish inside at all times and are the best device to stress them to death and grant them a short and tortured life.
Do not use round fish bowls.
