Description
Roman Amphitheater of Emerita Augusta, Merida, Spain.
Panoramic view of the Roman coliseum of Merida, the former Roman city of Emerita Augusta, where gladiators would fight to entertain the roman citizens just like they did at the Colosseum in Rome.
The Amphitheatre of Mérida was constructed in 8 BC to complement the Roman theater built next to it some 7 years earlier. The circus was used until the fall of the Empire in the 4th century and ended partially underground. It was uncovered in 1912.
Augusta Emerita was the capital of Lusitania, one of the three Roman provinces that conformed the Spanish territories. It was founded in 25 BC by Augustus to resettle veteran soldiers discharged from the Roman army from Legio V Alaudae and Legio X Gemina.
